Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a good documentary film or even a foreign film. This movie Old Partner was two in one for me tonight. I just saw it with my sister - who saw me watch it on my laptop and stuck around till the end of the movie. We were both skeptics thinking it will be "boring', but there must be some truth to the New York Times giving it the review "Deep and poignant". Old Partner has even won just SIX movie awards. Yes, it's a good movie!
Its about a Korean grandfather who has a strong bond with his work ox which was with him for half his life, putting all his kids through school and now taking care of them by doing a lot of the farm work. The farmer's wife is the comic relief this movie needs along with a handful of pleasant surprises - all just at the right moment. If the story doesn't get you at hello, the cinematography will. So, when you're ready to explore Korea's country side along with a big bowl of popcorn, get this DVD and sit with a good friend or blanket. You will be happy you did.
