PARTY DETAILS, as told by Sophia…

THEME

As Petite Productions is a kid-specific event planning company, we have the privilege of sharing in many milestone moments for our client’s, including a baby’s first birthday. What makes this event a little extra special above any other is that our “client” and birthday guest of honor is my little girl Sera!  Wanting to also celebrate our heritage, our theme focused on showcasing various cultural Korean elements.  In regards to the scale and importance of the event, Korean first birthdays can be compared to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Jewish culture or Quinceanera in Mexican culture.  Granted a one year old might prefer a nap over having to pose in a party dress, but turning one in Korean customs is symbolic as there was a time when not many babies made it to this birthday.  Throughout the years having a grand first birthday party continues to be an honored tradition for Korean families.

The overall concept to the theme was to highlight our Korean background, but using a more contemporary approach… and beyond all that, satisfy our main purpose in celebrating our daughter’s number one birthday and have a great time with our friends and family!

DECOR

Other than avoiding primary colors, our color palette was quite eclectic.  Much of our design inspirations came from the traditional Korean dresses or hanbok that Sera and I wore.  Reflecting a broad range of colors, patterns and textures, we incorporated all these elements into our décor, including the florals, linens, and cake.

Nisie of Enchanted Florist created tall rustic arrangements of pink cherry blossoms for an Asian touch, with hanging globes of flower blooms and pink silk wrapped boxes filled with shades of blush and deep pinks, eggplant and celadon green.  Our linens were blush matte satin linens with delicate vintage lace overlays.  As Korean traditional fabrics have a taffeta-like quality to them, we added custom taffeta garden rose accents to our main table and chair treatments.

Korean first birthdays highlight a main table called the dol sahng, literally meaning first birthday table. Ours fused traditional elements like gift packages wrapped in traditional fabrics and decorative towers along with a more contemporary floral name display created by Nisie. Flanked by impressive floral arrangements on stands, the backdrop was a custom board with a Korean symbol designed in crystal rhinestones.

We interpreted the ever so popular sweets display with a Korean twist incorporating traditional Korean rice cakes displayed in not so traditional candy jars and cake platters along with a variety of nostalgic Korean candies, cookies and snacks.

Our cake inspiration was primarily from Sera’s hanbok. The stripes on the top tier are typical to the design usually found on the bolero-like jacket worn on top, known as saekdong juhgori in Korean, which I wanted to incorporate to symbolize something more traditional. And of course we had to add a little sash ribbon at the base like the jacket sash. The bottom two tiers emphasized the dress colors and artwork of her hanbok. Since we couldn’t have our cake wear little shoes, our cake topper was the traditional shoes that accompany the hanbok attire. I sketched out the overall concept of the cake and presented it to Grace at Sweet Gems who brought what I had envisioned to life and beyond!

FOOD & DRINKS

As we wanted to keep the atmosphere of the party casual and energetic, I loved the idea of a taco guy, but that would spoil the plan for an all encompassing cultural experience for our guests!  So we collaborated with my super talented chef friend who created a fusion menu of Korean style bbq tacos grilled to order, with kimchee quesadillas and mini Korean kalbi sliders.  Yum!!!  We also had a display of Korean style sushi or kimbap ranging from the more traditional meat and veggies to spicy tuna as cold appetizers.  Beverages were a variety of Korean brand soft drinks and beers to complement the flavors of our menu.

We also had a self serve ice chest filled with old-school Korean popsicles and ice cream as after meal refreshments.

Fresh Korean rice crackers, similar in concept to popcorn only using rice, was also being popped on site, which kids couldn’t get enough of and guests got to take bags home as healthy favors!

ENTERTAINMENT

Korean Classical Music and Dance Company entertained our guests, performing a variety of Korean traditional dances, which was a first time experience for many.

Cultural-first-birthday-celebration-clothes-activites-8

A more traditional activity guests participate in is called the doljabi, where a number of items are set before the baby and the one they grab indicates their potential future profession or path.  Our Sera picked the golf club, predicting her future as a professional golfer!

This was at the clubhouse in Irvine. It was lime, lavender, and off white color combo. The birthday girl Tiffanie has a beautiful big twinkling eyes and we loved her so much! Her mom already had color combos and few ideas how she wanted the party to be set up. So it was much easier for us to work with and enjoyed our times together. The bright sunshine on her birthday made this party more special and pretty.

We DO Everything from sketching the ideas and color combos to food prep, flower deco, and stationery.

Sabine's First Birthday | Korean Dol

K19_7869

Fall is just around the corner and this “little birdie” themed dohl was the perfect little event to welcome the new season.  Susan (Sabine’s mommy) shared with me during our initial consultations that her daughter loved birds.  With a little visual inspiration she shared of an Anthropologie textile print of vintage birds, the elements of the party started to come to life.  The use of nests, birdies, vintage birdhouses, and branches incorporated into the little details set the stage for Sabine’s woodsy Autunm dohl.

K19_8186

Guests were greeted with a wishing tree to write Sabine a first birthday wish on tags of leaves.  Doljabi raffle tickets were dropped into nests.

K19_8189

Instead of a birthday banner, the use of tree decals with fluttering birds and falling leaves with a delicate handmade birthday garland “tied” to it’s branches served as a backdrop for this feminine and earthy head table.   Dohl towers were handmade by Sabine’s mom Susan.  Flowers were tied with raffia and loosely arranged in mason jars.  Doljabi items were a mix of traditional pieces and fun objects symbolizing each of the parent's backgrounds.

K19_7794

A handful of little guests were entertained with a “mini movie theater” set up in the venue’s lounge area complete with toddler friendly snacks like “munckin popcorn” aka pirate’s booty, strawberry pocky sticks, circus cookies, and juice boxes.

K19_7964

Sabine’s birthday cake was inspired by her multicultural background with the little girl figures each representing a piece of her ethnicity.

K19_7732

When it came time for the doljabi, Sabine was mesmerized by all of her invited guests and didn't pay much attention to what everyone was waiting in anticipation for her to choose.

K19_8362

It was truly magical to share in this little girl's birthday.  xoxo

Every mother has the desire to celebrate their child's first birthday in a very special way, be it in a quiet home setting with loved ones around or as a big event with all their friends and family. Mom's Love would like to share her interpretation of a traditional Korean first birthday party "DOL".

"I'm a professional Korean traditional 1st birthday party planner. I just want to share about the traditional party that includes many precious meanings for a baby. Additionally, I think, Dol is just one time chance for a baby to receive congratulation of traditional style until 60th birthday. Moreover, the baby can understand identity and pride as a Korean when he/she looks at Dol photos."

:: Traditional DOL Clothes ::

Every day childrens clothes were designed to keep babies warm. Families dressed their child in bright clothes and quilted socks for his or her first birthday (Dol), a tradition that has continued to the present day.

Kale's First Birthday | by Sally Shin

By: Sally Shin of Harvest Event and Design Coordination

I wanted Kale's Dohl to stay close to his Korean heritage so there was no question that we were going to offer a Korean inspired menu. The challenging part of this was that the venue we chose did not have a Korean menu of any sort. Therefore I improvised and gave the chef family recipes to prepare for this special occasion.

I wanted whimsical, unexpected and handmade touches throughout the event details. I thought making these personalized birthday hats served a dual purpose as place cards for arriving guests and party hats to wear for the party. It ended up being a fun idea for guests of every age!

I couldn't find the perfect blocks to spell out Kale's name on his cake so I made them myself.

An Ann Wood bird adorned the top of the cake. Her birds are SO popular that it was nearly impossible to snag. I managed to find this little birdie on eBay and he had the honor of gracing Kale's first birthday cake : )

Baby bling, enough said.

Tolijabee is a traditional Korean ritual where objects are placed on a table and the child’s future is predicted according to what he grabs. Some objects include:
  • Thread = long life
  • Book, Pencil, Notebook  = Successful Scholar
  • 100 Dollar Bill = Wealth
  • Computer Mouse = The next Steve Jobs
  • Microphone = Singer
  • Golf Ball = The next Tiger Woods

I knew my little singer was going to grab the mic. He loves music! We're hoping for the next Harry Connick Jr.....no pressure Kale.

His very first birthday wish.

Guests took home boxes of cookies which were the treat of choice because it was Kale's favorite snack at the time. Since then he's moved onto ice cream, lollipops and cupcakes...oh boy!
