Diaper Cakes + Ballons | by Cre8ive Chris

Written by: Hee Eun Chris Park

My name is Hee Eun "Chris" Park. I'm a happily married wife and mother of 2 living in Northern VA. I grew up in Southern MD and moved to VA after I graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Finance. I started my career in the finance/banking industry as an Assistant Branch Manager/Bank Officer and then moved to another bank as a Sr. Financial Specialist/Assistant Vice President. After 6 years in the finance/banking industry, I decided to go independent and so I began a new chapter in my life by becoming a self-employed Realtor with Century 21 New Millennium. I am currently licensed in MD & VA. I still enjoy helping people buy and sell homes but due to the tough economic and housing issues, business has been slow for me. It also doesn't help that I have 2 young children at home who are my top priorities. So, I decided to venture into a new business, which allowed me to continue to work from home and let me use more of my creative side, hence, the beginning of another new chapter in my life.

DSC_0051(2)Just like how quickly my life changed after meeting my husband, my new business has quickly flourished as well. In April 2010, I decided to try to make things out of balloons for my kids. I thought it was going to be difficult but it was actually pretty easy and fun for me. My kids seemed to love it as well. So, I decided to look online for instructions and videos on how to make several other items. Immediately, I started posting pictures of what I had made on Facebook and within a week, a friend asked me to make some balloon decorations for her son's 3rd birthday. It turned out to be a success. My friends loved it and I even got a possible future referral out of it. Since then, I have received a few more inquiries and now I have my first big balloon gig on May 22nd thanks to another friend who referred me to their friend. I may also have another smaller job for a friend in June but we will see.

On top of making balloon art, I also make diaper art. This all started with me trying to do something different for my sister-in-law's baby shower. I've seen the traditional diaper cakes before with the first one being given to me by one of my best friends for my baby shower back in 2007. Even though I think they are pretty, I personally wouldn't purchase one since they are pretty simple to make. So, I kept looking online and found some very unique diaper cakes. I just looked at the pictures and tried to replicate them myself changing things here and there to add my own personal touch. Just like the balloon art, I posted pictures online and within a week, I received my first order for one of my caterpillar and giraffe diaper art. I just delivered those to my friend yesterday and she loved them. Now, I'm getting a couple other inquiries for my other diaper art creations as well.

So, this is my life and how I got to where I am right now. I'm really enjoying this new business venture I have started and I hope it turns out to be a big success. Most of all, I enjoy creating balloon and diaper art because it allows me to spend time with my kids and it also lets me do something I enjoy while bringing joy to those who hire me as well. Although, the creations I have now are not 100% mine, I hope to come up with my own creations as new business grows. In the meantime, I give credit to those whose creations I have borrowed.

Hopefully, I will receive the same credit for my own creations in the future from other new balloon and diaper creators like myself.
